Online South Africa Resources
Keep track of everything going on in South Africa by reading the Mail and Guardian, Johannesburg-based The Star, and Cape Town-based Cape Argus.Apartheid in South Africa: A useful primer on Apartheid, including key figures, laws, and resistance efforts.
Apartheid and South Africa: A UN site, offering an interesting collection of visual images from the Apartheid era.
Truth and Reconciliation Commission Home Page: Don't be fooled by the front page - there's a ton of information loaded on here, including transcripts from all of the different victim testimonies before the TRC.
Polish Culture Site: Maddeningly organized, but stuffed to the gills with everything you ever wanted to know about Polish culture (and lots of food pictures).
Books on South Africa
The Mirror at Midnight: A South African Journey: While admittedly a little out of date, written as it was before Apartheid concluded, this offers an excellent introduction to the topic and the larger history of Europeans in South Africa. Part travel narrative and part history, this is very readable, written by the author of King Leopold's Ghost.Country of My Skull: A personal account of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, from an Afrikaner journalist covering it. Blends together analysis, anecdote, and personal testimony.
Coming to Terms: South Africa's Search for Truth: A more traditional discussion of the TRC, offering a more balanced presentation of testimonies from an apparently dispassionate, distanced voice. Nonetheless, it is interesting, and provides a complementary perspective to Skull.
